Out There // ITV

Out There is a six-part ITV thriller starring Martin Clunes (Doc Martin) and Louis Ashbourne Serkis (The Kid Who Would Be King). Set against a rural backdrop in Carmarthenshire, Wales, the show centers on a father and son entangled in dangerous circumstances. Because the story unfolds largely on a centuries-old farm, the production needed authentic environments that would convey both the serenity of Welsh countryside life and the tensions of the unfolding drama.

Our primary goal in designing the sets for Out There was to preserve the farm’s historic character while supporting the narrative’s dark, suspenseful tones. Working closely with the production team, we planned each space to showcase the earthy charm of a working farm, while introducing strategic visual details—like color changes, rustic props, and subtle signs of wear—that would reflect the intensity and turmoil faced by the characters.

From repainting the farmhouse’s exterior to installing custom stable structures, we carried out extensive modifications that captured the show’s atmosphere and storyline demands. Inside, we carefully dressed each room, blending the existing rustic features with crafted set pieces and furnishings. Though our interventions were substantial, we ensured that everything could be removed or reverted once filming concluded, restoring the property to its original condition out of respect for its 500-year history and the homeowners.

Problem

Problem

Balancing the needs of a working farm with a full-scale television production posed unique logistical hurdles. We had to schedule construction activities around the daily operations of the farm and coordinate closely with the cast and crew to maintain smooth filming conditions. Additionally, transforming the original look of the farmhouse—such as changing its color scheme—required thorough planning to ensure it matched the show’s visual style while still being reversible. The tight timeline for both set installation and restoration added an extra layer of complexity.

The final sets successfully captured the foreboding tension at the heart of Out There, while celebrating the authentic feel of rural Wales. By blending practical farming elements with cinematic design, we helped bring Martin Clunes’s character and the surrounding drama to life. Viewers can now experience the haunting landscape and sense of danger that pervades every scene, all rooted in the very real charm of a centuries-old working farm. Once production wrapped, we returned the property to its owners in excellent condition, leaving only the unforgettable experience of having played a part in an engaging and immersive ITV drama.
